The journey of The Little Sisters of St. Francis
Francis of Assisi was born into a wealthy merchant family but experienced a profound spiritual conversion that led him to embrace a life of poverty and service to others. His radical commitment to following Christ literally, especially the Gospel call to "go and repair my house," transformed not only his own life but also the entire Christian world.
Francis founded three orders that profoundly affected Christian spirituality: The Friars Minor (Franciscan friars), The Poor Clares (women religious), and the Third Order Regular and Secular (lay Franciscans). His emphasis on poverty, humility, and care for creation continues to inspire millions today. His famous prayer, "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace," captures the essence of Franciscan spirituality that guides our congregation.
Mother Mary Kevin Kearney, OSF, a courageous Irish Franciscan nun, arrived in Uganda with five other Sisters to pioneer work among the African people. Their mission began under a simple Mango Tree in Nsambya, symbolizing humble beginnings that would grow into a mighty work of God.
The early years were marked by tremendous challenges including tropical diseases, cultural barriers, and the need to learn local languages. However, Mother Kevin's unwavering faith and deep love for the African people sustained the mission. She quickly recognized the need for local vocations and began nurturing African women who felt called to religious life, laying the foundation for what would become our indigenous congregation.
On this blessed day, Mother Mary Kevin founded the Little Sisters of St. Francis at Nsambya, Kampala-Uganda. This momentous occasion marked the birth of the first indigenous Franciscan congregation in East Africa. The foundation welcomed young women from diverse ethnic groups, embodying the universal call to holiness that transcends tribal and cultural boundaries.
The new congregation was established with a clear mission: to serve the marginalized and bring Christ's love to those most in need. The founding principles emphasized education, healthcare, and social services, particularly for women and children. The sisters adopted the Franciscan spirit of simplicity, joy, and service, adapting it to the African context while maintaining the essential charism of St. Francis.
Today, the Little Sisters of St. Francis have grown into a vibrant international congregation serving in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, USA, and Germany. Our community represents over fifty ethnic groups, truly embodying the catholic (universal) nature of the Church. This diversity is our strength, bringing together different cultures, languages, and traditions united in our common mission.
Our ministries have expanded to include education at all levels, healthcare services, pastoral care, social work, and advocacy for the marginalized. We continue to respond to the signs of the times, addressing contemporary challenges such as HIV/AIDS care, environmental conservation, human trafficking awareness, and interfaith dialogue. Our global presence allows us to share resources, expertise, and spiritual support across continents, strengthening our collective witness to the Gospel.
"Prayer is our first priority, drawing from John 15:4 - Remain in me and I will remain in you"
